Standing on a friend's head: who carries whom

When players can stand on each other, odd things appear: two characters hold each other up and float, the top one slides off when the base walks, or a stack of three moves at three different speeds. Here is how to decide who is the base and pass the movement upward.

Why this works

Support always points downward: you stand on whoever is lower. A rule that cannot point sideways or upward can never go in a circle, so two friends can never hold each other up, however the game orders them.

When not to use it

Wrong for games where players should not be able to block or boost each other, such as competitive matches. Standing on a rival can trap them. Turn off the carrying between opponents, or let players pass through each other.
