Let the game ease off after a hard fight instead of spawning at a flat rate
A constant stream of enemies tires players, and a stream that only reacts to kills lets them hide and farm. A small director with three moods builds pressure, holds a peak and then gives a breather. The hard part is how the peak ends when the player simply waits.
Why this works
Tension only means something against rest. Measuring how hard the player is pressed lets the game push when things are calm and hold back when they are not, and a rest after each high point gives the next one its weight. Every phase also needs a way out.
When not to use it
Skip it when the game is a steady test of endurance or the pacing is fully designed by hand, such as a rhythm level or a story fight. A director there fights your own timing. A flat, readable rate is better for players who want to settle in.
