Shots miss a moving target even though the crosshair was right on its body

The shooter sees the other player a moment in the past, because of lag and smoothing. The server checks the shot against where the body is now, so good aim keeps missing. The cure is to remember where bodies were. Here is the memory and how to look things up in it.

Why this works

Fairness means judging a shot by what the shooter saw, and what they saw was the past. If the server keeps a short history of where bodies stood and blends between entries the way the screen did, it can answer exactly where the target was, then forget it.

When not to use it

Wrong for slow games or ones with area attacks and big forgiving hit zones, where nobody sees a miss. It is also a bad deal in games where being shot behind cover feels unfair; there favour the one being shot.
