Tell the player a row of a picture puzzle can no longer work

In puzzles where number clues say how many filled cells sit in a row, players mark a wrong cell and only learn it twenty moves later. This entry shows how to check a half-filled row against its clue at once, even with cells still unknown.

Why this works

A clue is a promise about the whole row, so a row is dead only when no way of filling the unknown cells keeps the promise. Trying the placements left to right and remembering the results answers that quickly and exactly.

When not to use it

Telling the player a row is impossible removes part of the puzzle for those who enjoy finding mistakes themselves. Make it a switch for beginners, and do not show it in a mode that is meant to be hard.
