Load an old save whose items were renamed, removed or changed in size
After an update, old saves crash the game or silently lose items because an id was renamed or a stack limit was lowered. A good loader never throws away what it does not understand. This entry shows what to rename, what to rescue and what to report.
Why this works
A saved game is a promise from the past. Treating anything the new version does not understand as something to keep, not to throw away, means an update never takes belongings from a player, even when it cannot place them.
When not to use it
Do not patch old saves one by one when the changes are so large that old and new games barely match. Offer a fresh start with a gift, or a clear message, instead of a conversion that leaves a broken world.
