A jump pressed just before landing should still happen
Players mash jump a moment too early and nothing happens, which feels like the game ate the input. Remembering the press for a moment helps, but remembered presses can fire twice or at the wrong time. Here is the careful version.
Why this works
People press a little early because they are already thinking about the next move, not because they pressed wrong. Remembering the intention for a moment lets the game carry out what the player meant instead of punishing them for being early.
When not to use it
Skip it when a jump on landing would be wrong, such as landing on a trap or a slippery surface where the player needs a pause to get their balance. Also keep it short in games with slow, heavy characters, where a jump the player did not mean feels like a bug.
