Send a second enemy by another route instead of behind the first
Every enemy takes the same shortest route and arrives in a queue, one at a time. Here is how to make later ones prefer a different way when there is one, and why that must be a price on the shared path and never a ban.
Why this works
If every enemy takes the cheapest route, they all take the same one and arrive in a line. Making the ground the first one used cost a little extra pushes the next to another way when a reasonable one exists, yet still lets it follow when there is none.
When not to use it
Skip it in tight corridors, mazes with one road in, or when you want a relentless single-file horde, since there is no second route to find. Also skip it when the flank would take so long that the attack stops being a group.
