Letting the treasury go into debt without breaking the game
Upkeep keeps charging even when the money is gone. Blocking all spending is harsh, allowing endless debt is silly. This entry shows a middle road with three money states, interest that bites, a way back, and an end that does not come out of nowhere.
Why this works
Debt is a loan against the future, so it should grow and have a limit that is clear in advance. A gentle slope into trouble, with a way back at each step, teaches budgeting better than a wall that blocks all spending.
When not to use it
Do not use it in a game about a poor start or a strict budget puzzle, where the lesson is that money must never run out. Also avoid it for young players. There, simply refuse the purchase and show what is missing.
