Make a countdown show 0 only at the very end, with a tick each second
A timer that shows 0:00 while a fraction of a second is still left, or flashes 1 for a blink, or ticks twice in a row, feels wrong and robs players of the last moment. Here is how to round the time shown and trigger the ticks exactly once.
Why this works
People read a countdown as time left to act. As long as any sliver remains, there is still a second to use, so the number should not already say zero. Rounding up gives that, and tracking the end time instead of adding up slices keeps pauses honest.
When not to use it
Don't use it when the exact fraction matters, such as a race timer or a speedrun, where players want to see tenths running down. Show the true decimals there, and let the final whole number be the moment of zero.
