Cancelling a build should refund the right amount, once

Players cancel buildings all the time, and every wrong refund becomes a money trick or a feeling of being cheated. This entry shows what the refund must depend on, which cancel clicks must give nothing, and how to keep the books honest.

Why this works

A refund is a return of money that was really paid, so it must come from the record of the payment, not from today's price list. Then no price change or discount can turn cancelling into profit, and each job can be cancelled only once.

When not to use it

Skip the partial refund when cancelling should feel free, as in a relaxed city builder where players plan and change their mind. Give everything back there, and keep the record anyway so a second click still pays nothing.
