Spielerando

Give every character their own idle breathing so a crowd does not move as one

Twenty villagers who all sway in perfect unison look like a glitch. Randomising at the start does not help when the game is saved and loaded or played online, since everybody must see the same thing. Here is how to give each character a stable personal rhythm without storing anything.

Why this works

A value computed from a stable name is the same for everyone, on every machine and after every load, so nothing has to be stored or sent. Taking different parts of the mix for different traits gives each character a rhythm that is personal yet repeatable.

When not to use it

Wrong when the rhythm must react to the story, such as breathing that speeds up after a fight or stops at a scare. Then drive it from what happens. It also does nothing for a crowd of two, where you can simply set the offsets by hand.
