Keep a high score list that handles ties, a full list and odd names
A list of best scores looks simple until two players reach the same score, the list is full, or someone types a long or empty name. This entry says who is placed first at a tie, when a score does not make it onto the list, and how to clean names.
Why this works
A ranking is a promise about fairness, so the rules for the awkward cases must be fixed before they happen. Whoever got there first keeps the place, a full list may refuse a newcomer, and whatever a player types is cleaned before anyone sees it.
When not to use it
Skip the local list when scores should be shared and checked online, because anyone can fake a number on their own machine. Use a server that verifies runs, or keep the list for fun and do not treat it as a contest.
