What Is MCP? A Plain Guide for Game Makers
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to plug extra knowledge and tools into your AI, so it can look things up or use another program. It gives your AI more facts and more actions, but it does not make its answers right.
What is MCP?
The project calls MCP an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to other systems, and compares it to a USB-C port. One plug, many devices.
On one side is your AI tool, such as Claude Code or Cursor. On the other side is a server, which is a small service that offers something. A server can offer three things: tools the AI can use, data it can read, and ready-made prompts.
A server built once works with any AI tool that supports MCP. Claude Code and Cursor both do.
What can MCP do in a game project?
Servers for game work fall into a few groups, and some are riskier than others.
| Kind | What it does | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | Gives your AI guides, examples or values to read | Low, if it only reads and you trust the source |
| Project tools | Connects to your task lists or design documents | Medium, because it touches your data |
| Engine control | Lets the AI look at or change your game engine | Higher, because it can change your project |
| Asset tools | Drives a program such as Blender | Higher, and check the licence of what comes out |
The MCP introduction itself mentions AI models creating 3D designs in Blender. For game engines, community servers exist. One example, GameDev-MCP-Server, calls itself an engine-agnostic server shared by plugins for Unity, Godot and Unreal. This area changes fast, so look at your engine's own documentation to see what it offers today.
How do I connect a server?
In Claude Code, run this in your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http my-server https://example.com/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer your-token"
In Cursor, add the server to .cursor/mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"my-server": {
"url": "https://example.com/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:MY_TOKEN}" }
}
}
}
If you are not sure, ask your AI to do this for you.
How do I decide if a server is OK to connect?
The official MCP standard is direct about the risk. Tools can run code, so they must be treated with care. Descriptions of what a tool does should not be trusted unless the server itself is trusted. Your AI tool must ask for your consent before it uses a tool.
The Claude Code docs add that you should make sure you trust each server before you connect it. A server that fetches outside content can expose you to prompt injection, which means hidden text that tricks your AI into following orders.
Six questions to ask:
- Who runs it? Is there a named operator and public source code?
- What can it change? Read the list of tools. A server that only reads is very different from one that writes files or runs commands.
- What leaves your computer? Do your game files or your data go to the server?
- What comes back? Text from a server goes straight to your AI, where it can act like an instruction.
- How are keys handled? Keep keys out of files that get shared.
- What does it cost? Each answer also uses up your AI's space and allowance.
What does MCP not do?
- It does not make an answer true. An AI can misread a good source, so ask it to show you where that is written.
- It does not test anything by itself.
- It does not settle legal questions. A server that hands you text gives you no rights beyond what its terms say.
- It does not replace playing your game.
What does Spielerando's MCP server do?
Our server is at https://spielerando.com/api/mcp. It gives your AI our wiki, examples and tested values, so your AI can look things up while it builds and stops guessing. With your key it can also manage your cloud projects on this site.
- You need an account. Log in by e-mail or Google and create a key.
- Usage is counted in tokens, though no AI runs on our side. A token here is a fixed measure of how much we hand back.
- It does not test your game. It never takes or runs your game or your code, and it cannot tell you whether your game works. It only checks the models and proofs your AI saves to a cloud project.
