Unity AI Coding Assistant: Credits or Claude Plugin?

A Unity AI coding assistant comes in two kinds: Unity's own assistant inside the editor, paid for with credits, or an outside coding tool connected to Unity. Unity's own one sees your scene without any setup, while an outside tool makes more sense if you already pay for a coding AI.

All facts here are from Unity's pages on 2 November 2026.

Route 1: Unity's assistant

Unity says its assistant can understand your scene, inspect objects and help drive the editor. It needs Unity 6.0 or later. Pro, Enterprise and Industry customers get it with their subscription. Personal users can start a free trial, which turns into a paid subscription at $10 a month.

It runs on Unity Credits. Unused credits do not roll over, and at zero the AI features pause until the next billing cycle, unless you buy more. Unity stresses that these figures are examples and not fixed rates.

Job Mode Unity's estimate
Simple script Lite About 8 credits
Debug an issue across the project Lite About 35
Full gameplay mechanic Lite About 58
Third-person player controller Default About 190
The same controller Ultra About 450

Here is what that means for an evening on Orchard Golem, an invented game where you walk a stone golem through an orchard. One controller on Default, three mechanics on Lite and five debug rounds on Lite come to 190 + 174 + 175 = 539 credits. Switch only the controller to Ultra and it costs 260 more.

So the mode you pick matters more than how many messages you send. Start on Lite and move up when it fails. The pages we read did not state the monthly credits for a Personal user, so check your allowance in the Unity Dashboard first.

Route 2: an outside coding tool

Unity announced a plugin for Claude Code on 9 September 2026, with 29 engine skills at launch. Inside Claude Code you add it like this:

/plugin marketplace add Unity-Technologies/unity-agent-plugin
/plugin install unity@unity-agent-plugin

Skills that control the editor also need the Unity CLI, which lets outside tools talk to Unity, plus the Pipeline package in your project and the editor open. Run unity status to see if the CLI can reach it. You pay for Claude Code separately.

Older guides may send you to the Unity MCP server in the assistant package. Unity's docs now mark that as deprecated and point to the CLI.

Which should I choose?

  • New to all of this: Unity's assistant. There is less to set up, and it already sees your scene.
  • Already paying for a coding AI: the outside route, so you are not paying twice.
  • Big changes across many scripts: an outside tool is usually more at home there.

Either way, both routes can look at the real project. Use that. Have the AI read the scene first and draw what it finds in Mermaid, a text format for diagrams that mermaid.live displays. A carrying system has more situations than it seems, so the inventory page is worth a look too.

Paste this to your AI

We are working in my Unity project, Orchard Golem. The golem should pick up an apple when it walks over one, and carry up to three.

First look at the open scene and name the objects and scripts that deal with the golem and the apples, exactly as they are called. If you cannot see the scene, say so and ask me for what you need.

Then draw the golem's carrying as a Mermaid diagram: empty, one apple, two, three, and what happens at a fourth. Compare it with what you found in the scene and tell me what is missing. Wait for my OK, then build from it.

Afterwards list the objects and scripts you changed, and what the Console shows after entering Play mode. If you have not entered Play mode, write "not played". Do not describe behaviour you have not seen happen.

Or skip this and connect the MCP: your AI then finds all of this by itself.Connect the MCP

How to check it worked

  • Look up the names in the Hierarchy window. Each one the AI named should exist.
  • Walk over four apples. The fourth should do what the diagram says, and the count should stay at three.
  • Read the Console yourself. It should match what the AI reported.
  • Compare your credits or usage before and after. That is your real price for one feature.
